My love affair with VWs began when Santa brought me a toy one for my second Christmas (you can click here to hear some of my first words on the subject [40k]).

'73 Karmann Ghia coupé | '66 Beetle 1300 | '67 Karmann Ghia cabriolet
My first REAL VW was a needy '66 Beetle I picked up while doing my undergrad in 1987. Even if duct tape held a lot of the parts together, I loved the car as if there were no other. But soon thereafter, I discovered a Karmann Ghia shares the same reliable Beetle mechanics under a much sexier body and I was newly smitten! I bought a '73 Ghia coupe in 1990 (also duct-tape worthy), but then in 1991 (after a LOT of searching) I found and purchased the '67 Ghia cabriolet which instantly became the new love of my life (by now you may have guessed I was single during a lot of this period).

Ghia with Glasshouse Mountains as backdrop For the longest time I didn't have the heart to part company with my first loves, but by 1991 my VW "disease" found me in various phases of restoring the three cars pictured in the top picture on the left. By that point, I decided my amorous attachment to cars was becoming excessive (ergo: I got a life and found homes for my first two cars). I sold my '67 Ghia in 1996 prior to moving to Australia (foolishly assuming there would be countless Ghia cabriolets in a land with so much sunshine - in fact, they were never imported). I now belong to the yellow 1971 Karmann Ghia cabriolet pictured here.
1971 Saturngelb (saturn yellow) Karmann Ghia cabriolet
Why this infatuation with Karmann Ghias? I think they're works of art. Each Ghia was semi hand-built by master craftsmen who sculpted the shapely lines and curves that make the car so compelling. They may be comparatively gutless, but I love the reliable sound of the air-cooled engine and the feel of the wind in my hair when driving ;quot;topless;quot;.
